Smash Boom Best producers Rosie duPont and Aron Woldeslassie are a little early for the BIG game. Looking to kill some time they decide to play Impression Sound. Just like the great Brains On game Mystery Sound, Impression Sound has players guessing sounds. BUT unlike Mystery Sound, Aron and Rosie will be making the sounds with their mouths -- like an impression. Hence the very appropriate name for this game: Impression Sound!

CREW: Now entering Brains On headquarters.

ROSIE: Hey, smarty pal. It's Smash Boom best producer Rosie Dupont here with my friend without end, my bro in the know, Smash Boom best producer Aron Woldeslassie.

ARON: Hey, Rosie. Thanks so much for coming with me to the sportsball arcade. I think the first all ball event starts in like a few minutes.

ROSIE: Thanks for inviting me. But I got to know, what's an all ball game like?

ARON: It's pretty much what you'd expect for a sport that mashes up volleyball, basketball, golf, bowling, and pickleball all into one. Here, I got you a juice box and some popcorn.

ROSIE: Beet juice with a hint of lime? You remembered my favorite flavor.

ARON: It looks like the all ball game is not going to start for a few minutes. Want to play a few rounds of impression sound off while we wait?

ROSIE: Impression sound off? What's that?

ARON: It's like the classic Brains On game Mystery Sounds. But instead of getting random mystery sounds, this time, we make the sound effects with our mouths. Then the other person guesses what sound we were trying to make. It's sort of like doing impressions, but instead of people, we're doing sounds.

ROSIE: Oh, that sounds like fun. I like it.

ARON: All right, since we're here for the all ball, let's stick to sounds related to sports. Does that sound good?

ROSIE: Mm-hmm. Yeah, wonderful. On theme.

ARON: OK, I'll do an impression of a sports sound and you'll have to guess what it is, and then we'll switch.

ROSIE: Bring it on, buddy.

ARON: OK. [RHYTHMIC THUNKING]

ROSIE: Again. Again. Can you do it again?

ARON: Yeah. [RHYTHMIC THUNKING]

ROSIE: Well, all I can think of is jackhammering, which is not a sport. Oh, a basketball.

ARON: That's close. It has a ball.

ROSIE: OK. It has a ball that probably goes [RHYTHMIC THUNKING] Ooh boy. I think I need to request a hint.

ARON: OK. I think I can confidently say that this is the heaviest ball in all of sports.

ROSIE: Oh, bowling.

ARON: Yep.

ROSIE: Yay. What was the [RHYTHMIC THUNKING]?

ARON: That's the-- that's how they sound when they roll on the lane.

ROSIE: What? That is not how they sound. They sound like [DEEP RHYTHMIC THUNKING] Come on. Anyway, OK, my turn, my turn.

ARON: OK.

ROSIE: Here we go.

ARON: Your turn.

ROSIE: All right, let me--

ARON: Let's see you do better.

ROSIE: All right, OK. Here we go.

[WHIPPING SOUNDS]

Yeah? Ideas?

ARON: OK. Well, I don't think there's like-- is there like a game where you're like spitting into a field of wheat or-- is it tennis? Like, you're like-- like you're throwing-- like you're whipping like a ball. Is it baseball?

ROSIE: No, no, no, stay in the tennis realm.

ARON: OK. Tennis. Can I hear it again?

ROSIE: Sure, sure, sure. OK.

[WHIPPING SOUND]

Oh, that was not as good as the first one. But do you have the general-- it's tennis adjacent.

ARON: Is it badminton?

ROSIE: You're so close. It's like kill-- it's killing me.

ARON: Is it pickleball?

ROSIE: Oh, no! You're so-- what's the other one?

ARON: Is it table tennis?

ROSIE: Yes. But what else is table tennis called?

ARON: Ping pong.

ROSIE: Yeah.

ARON: Yeah.

ROSIE: Yeah, you got it. You got it. Wow, we're so-- we're picking such tricky sports.

ARON: I know.

ROSIE: We're stumping each other.

ARON: All right, I think I'm going to go-- I'm going to go a little bit bigger with this next one, all right? Are you ready?

ROSIE: OK. Yeah, I'm ready.

ARON: OK.

[CLICKING SOUND]

ROSIE: A horse. So it's a--

ARON: Yep.

ROSIE: Yeah. But that's not a sport, so it's equestrian? Horseback riding. OK, that neigh was exquisite.

ARON: My neighs have gotten very good over the years.

ROSIE: OK, so here we go. I will come up with a sound now for last sport.

[IMITATES ATHLETE CALLING PLAY, ANIMAL NOISES, DEEP THUNKING]

ARON: OK. I got it. I think I got it from the first part.

ROSIE: A little bit of a giveaway.

ARON: Yeah. Hold on. Just-- just for-- just for peace of mind, can I get it one more time? Because I just want to hear the second part again.

ROSIE: All right, sure. [LAUGHS]

[IMITATES ATHLETE CALLING PLAY, ANIMAL NOISES, DEEP THUNKING]

ARON: OK, that's definitely football.

[DING DING]

ROSIE: Yes. [LAUGHS] That's the most expressive game of football you'll ever hear.

ARON: Yeah. I enjoy-- I very much enjoy your football impression. Thank you so much for that.

ROSIE: You're very welcome. You're very welcome. It's my pleasure.

ARON: Oh, thank you. Thank you. I know I'm a superior guesser. Thank you so much.

ROSIE: They're not cheering for you. They're cheering for my sound making skills.

ARON: No, they're not.

ROSIE: Yes, they're cheering for-- [GASPS] all ball. The game's about to start.

Do you have any idea what's going on?

ARON: No, it's just chaos. It's a swarm of balls.

ROSIE: I hate to say it, but I don't think the sport will catch on.

ARON: I think you're right.

ROSIE: That's it for this Smarty Pass episode. It was made by Aron Woldeslassie and Anna Goldfield. Our executive producer is Beth Perlman. And the executives in charge of APM Studios are Chandra Kavati, Joanne Griffith, and Alex Schaffert. Brains On Is a non-profit public radio program. Thanks Smarty Pass friends. We appreciate you.
